Why Do This?
When I first had the thought to do yoga for Lent, I had no idea what it would look like but I knew I had to do it! As the idea took shape in my mind, I became excited to invite you along on the journey (experiment actually…I’ve never observed Lent before, but “journey” sounds more yoga-ish, doesn’t it?) I want you to join me, so we can discover together what God has for us this season, but also because I’m giving up ice cream and I need support.
Seriously though, if you are not Anglican, Eastern Orthodox, Lutheran, Methodist, or Roman Catholic you may not be familiar with the observance of Lent. The focus and method varies, but the purpose is to prepare your heart for the celebration of Easter. Whether you plan to give up an indulgence or a habit, or simply reorient your life toward God in a new way, Lent is an opportunity to deepen your relationship with your savior.
So why combine yoga with Lent? The movements and breathing in yoga contribute to calming the nervous system while at the same time energizing the mind and body. I believe it prepares the mind, heart, and soul to be focused and centered and is the perfect companion to the spiritual disciplines.
I’ve chosen the book, Pauses for Lent: 40 Words for 40 Days, to read and share with you in a 10 minute video every day for the 40 days of Lent (Sundays are not included in the 40 days). All you need to do is check your email each day (trying to do this at the same time each day will probably work best), put on comfy clothes, click on the link to the video and follow along.
